Primary School Visit

On January 31st, some of the Horsepower team members took a trip down to the Chartiers Valley Primary School to teach kids about robots. We started by demonstrating how the build process works. This consisted of Clare pushing Jack around “obstacles” (Team members standing around the gym) while Morgan “programmed the robot” (told Clare how many steps to take while the kids counted along).

Next we called up kids with birthdays to show them how to drive the robot. We gave them safety glasses and Morgan guided them through the gym and let them place a FIRTS SteamWorks gear on a peg.

After the kids were done driving, Austin and Morgan showed off our FIRTS Power UP robot, Flash, and its abilities. The kids cheered as our robot grew to be 8 feet tall and held onto the power cubes. The first graders got so excited they started chanting until the crates were dropped.

The event was successful and kids are excited to learn more about robotics. We hope to start a FIRST Lego League team at the Primary School very soon.
